NMSA Delivers Twelve Truckloads of Essential Medicines and Medical Supplies to Kenema District

As part of its quarterly nationwide distribution of Free Healthcare Programme commodities, the National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA) has delivered twelve truckloads of essential medicines and medical supplies to the Kenema District Health Management Team (DHMT), reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the continuous availability of life-saving health commodities across Sierra Leone.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Director of Quality Assurance at NMSA, Dr. Augustine Solomon Brima, said the distribution forms part of the Agency’s statutory mandate to procure, store, and distribute medicines and medical supplies to districts and health facilities in accordance with the national quarterly distribution plan. He noted that the exercise demonstrates NMSA’s continued commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare delivery system by ensuring that health facilities receive the commodities they need to provide quality services.
Dr. Brima explained that the twelve truckloads were delivered in two phases. Earlier in the week, three truckloads were supplied to the Kenema District Medical Store containing medicines and medical commodities for the treatment and management of malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis (TB). These supplies are intended to serve the entire Kenema District including Panguma Government Hospital.
He further stated that nine additional truckloads were delivered during the official handover ceremony and allocated as follows:
One truckload to Panguma Hospital;
Three truckloads to Kenema Government Hospital; and
Five truckloads to the Kenema District Health Management Team (DHMT) for onward distribution to peripheral health units and other health facilities across the district.
Dr. Brima urged health workers and facility managers to ensure that the medicines and medical supplies reach their intended beneficiaries, particularly pregnant women, lactating mothers, children under five years of age, persons with disabilities, and survivors of Ebola and COVID-19. He reaffirmed NMSA’s commitment to ensuring that medicines and medical commodities provided by the Government of Sierra Leone and its development partners are distributed promptly and efficiently to improve health outcomes nationwide.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by a member of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Health, Hon. Festus Mohamed Lansana, who commended the National Medical Supplies Agency for its continued efforts in ensuring the timely distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies throughout the country.
Hon. Lansana reminded health officials that significant public resources are invested in procuring these life-saving commodities and urged them to manage and utilize them responsibly. He cautioned that any individual found diverting, misappropriating, or misusing government medicines would face the full force of the law.
Receiving the consignment on behalf of Kenema Government Hospital, the Deputy Matron, Emmanuel Komeh, expressed appreciation to the Government of Sierra Leone, through the National Medical Supplies Agency, for the timely delivery of the medicines and medical supplies. He described the commodities as vital to the hospital’s ability to provide quality healthcare services and assured stakeholders that the hospital management would ensure they are used appropriately for the benefit of patients.
The distribution forms part of NMSA’s broader mandate to guarantee the uninterrupted availability of safe, quality, and effective medicines and medical supplies across Sierra Leone, thereby supporting the Government’s efforts to strengthen the national healthcare system and improve the health and well-being of all citizens.
