Freetown, Sierra Leone \u2014 The National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA), the Agency mandated to procure drugs on behalf of Government, has procured Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) commodities valued at approximately US$2 million for the Ministry of Health, through the Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme, for onward distribution to health facilities across Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commodities are intended to strengthen the capacity of health facilities to provide essential sexual and reproductive health services, particularly for women and children, while ensuring that patients have access to the medicines, medical supplies and equipment they need without unnecessary financial barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the importance of the commodities, Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby said the supplies form part of the Government’s efforts under the 300 Days of Activism, while also contributing to the broader strengthening of Sierra Leone’s healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Demby acknowledged concerns raised by citizens who sometimes visit health facilities only to be informed that essential medicines are unavailable, or that the equipment required for certain procedures or surgeries is not available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These concerns are serious,” the Minister said, stressing the need to ensure that significant investments by Government and its partners translate into the availability of essential commodities at health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Sierra Leone approaches 192 days of the 300 Days of Activism, the Ministry of Health says there are encouraging signs of progress in key health indicators, citing a decline in maternal mortality of approximately 32%, a decline in infant mortality of close to 14%, and the identification of more than 90% of zero-dose children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commodities distributed through the public healthcare system are provided free of charge, particularly those intended to support women and children who depend on public health facilities for essential services. The Ministry is therefore encouraging citizens to report instances where they are asked to pay for commodities or services officially designated as free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Receiving the commodities on behalf of the Agency, NMSA Managing Director Madam Jatu Abdulai assured that the supplies will be distributed to health facilities across the country. She said the NMSA will work closely with the relevant directorates to develop an allocation plan to guide the distribution process, which will begin taking into account the critical importance of the commodities to saving the lives of pregnant women, mothers and their babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We will sit with the different directorates to develop an allocation plan that will guide the distribution process,” Madam Abdulai said, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the commodities reach the facilities where they are most needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly received medicines and medical commodities are expected to help address critical health challenges, including sepsis, severe bleeding and postpartum haemorrhage, which remain major concerns in maternal and newborn healthcare. The NMSA will be responsible for ensuring that the commodities are efficiently stored, allocated and distributed to health facilities nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest consignment forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Health and its partners to strengthen Sierra Leone’s health supply chain, improve commodity availability, and ensure that health workers have the tools they need to provide quality services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
