{"id":1,"date":"2019-01-29T18:34:25","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T18:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nmsa.gov.sl\/\/?p=1"},"modified":"2020-02-15T14:04:25","modified_gmt":"2020-02-15T14:04:25","slug":"hello-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmsa.gov.sl\/index.php\/2019\/01\/29\/hello-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Sierra Leone Gets New Medical Supplies Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/snradio.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/44929849_1072304159616579_1602760569415270400_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6362\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA), which was established by an \nAct of Parliament, is all set to commence full operation in Sierra \nLeone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NMSA is a public service agency responsible for the procurement, \nwarehousing, and distribution of drugs and medical supplies in a \ntransparent and cost effective manner for and on behalf of all public \ninstitutions throughout Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enactment of the National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA) Act of \n2017 repeals and replaces the National Pharmaceutical Unit Act of 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing Director of NMSA, Dr. Lawrence A. Sandi the primary \nobjective of the agency is to ensure quality and transparency in the \nmanagement of drugs and medical supplies in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The need to transform the operations of the central medical stores is\n paramount on the agenda of the new agency, according to Dr. Sandy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He disclosed that Sierra Leone was fastly approaching donor fatigue \nin the area of procurement of the free healthcare drugs, as the country \nhad been wholly dependent on donors for the procurement of the drugs and\n medical supplies since 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sandy pointed out that the National Pharmaceutical Procurement \nUnit was dissolved in 2015\/16 as a result of the lack of political will \nand transparency in drug management in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new management team, he continued, will strengthen the existing \nstructures with a professional and transparent approach to ensure sanity\n in procurement, storage and distribution of drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The major components to be targeted by the new agency include free \nhealthcare drugs, reintroduction of cost recovery drugs and proper \nregulation of drugs meant for vertical diseases including HIV\/AIDS, \ntuberculosis and malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Sandy explained that the agency shall be working closely with \nline ministries and agencies including the National Pharmacy Board on \nall drugs and medical supplies procurement and general management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said two third of government\u2019s investment in healthcare goes \ntowards drugs and medical supplies procurement, while emphasizing the \nneed for credible management of such funds and supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the new agency, concerns of irregularities in drugs and medical supplies will be a thing of the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NMSA will ensure unfettered access of quality drugs to \nbeneficiaries of the free healthcare scheme,\u201d he assured, adding that \nthe new agency and management is bringing onboard efficiency, \ntransparency and innovation in drugs management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inaugural board of the agency would be unveiled on Thursday 6th \nDecember 2018 at the conference hall of the Ministry of Health and \nSanitation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA), which was established by an Act of Parliament, is all set to commence full operation in Sierra Leone.
